Adorno beschreibt, dass in der Moderne zwei Kräfte zusammenwirken: Sachlichkeit als Wert (alles soll rational, funktional und nüchtern sein) und Entfremdung (Menschen sind vom Produkt ihrer Arbeit und vom Warenfluss getrennt). Diese Kombination führt zu einem „Kältestrom“ – also zu einer gefühlten Kälte und Distanz, in der die Welt entpersonalisiert und emotionslos erscheint.

Adorno describes how two forces interact in modernity: objectivity as a value (everything should be rational, functional, and sober) and alienation (people are separated from the product of their labour and from the flow of goods). This combination leads to a "cold current"—a perceived coldness and distance in which the world appears depersonalized and emotionless.
